Curatorial Concept
The Mobius booth at this year's edition of UVNT features a captivating dual presentation, showcasing the works of two distinct artists: Gino Rubert from Spain and Roman Tolici from Romania. This pairing offers a compelling exploration of contrasting artistic narratives that, when brought together, form a harmonious and thought-provoking juxtaposition.
Gino Rubert's artistic creations possess a mysterious allure that is both disquieting and enticing. His work delves deep into the intricacies of human emotions, with themes of love, sensuality, and desire taking center stage. What sets Rubert apart is his ability to draw the viewer into his profound inner world, inviting them to play an active role in the narrative. His pieces transcend the physical realm, revealing the vulnerability underlying intense human experiences. The hallmark of Rubert's art lies in the palpable intimacy and connection he forges between the spectator and the evocative worlds he crafts. In many ways, his mastery resembles that of a skilled stage director, orchestrating a symphony of emotions, desires, and human drama.
Conversely, Roman Tolici's art serves as a contemplative space that delves into the existential quandaries of contemporary existence. His oeuvre continues a longstanding exploration of the self, rife with startling self-portraits that grapple with biological and metaphysical dimensions. Tolici confronts challenging and seemingly exhausted subjects such as desire, love, sex, loneliness, and death, utilizing a disquieting visual vocabulary that leaves an indelible impact. Furthermore, he observes and documents the realities of capitalism, translating them into compositions that intriguingly blur the lines between reality and fiction. Through his photorealistic work, Tolici amplifies, tests, and orchestrates the real within a staged unreality.
These two artists, emerging from the same generation yet hailing from different parts of Europe, namely the west (Spain) and the east (Romania), collectively offer a profound and diverse panorama of artistic practice. Their distinct backgrounds, shaped by social, political, and personal influences, enrich the art fair's tapestry with a rich blend of perspectives and sensibilities. This juxtaposition not only highlights their individual artistry but also prompts viewers to engage in a thought-provoking dialogue about the varied expressions of contemporary artistic endeavor.
