  • CALEF - Contemporary Art Limited Edition Fair

    The first limited edition art fair in Romania and Eastern Europe, CALEF is a new format of contemporary art fair with an unconventional approach, accessible and alternative to the institutional art system, CALEF brings together local and international independent galleries and artists, making available to the public a wide range of contemporary artworks that are produced in limited editions. 

     

    ABOUT 

    We seek some of the freshest and forefront types of contemporary art, which from the beginning have been part of CALEF's DNA, presenting offset prints based on fine art prints, digraphs, lithographs, serigraphs, engravings, illustrations, photographs, ceramics, artist objects, video works - each piece being created in a limited series, numbered and signed by artists.

     

    At the beginning of 2019, Mobius was the first gallery in Romania to produce and make available to the public artworks in limited editions. Since then, it rapidly evolved into a new form of market for independent artists and galleries, creating a new segment of the public and buyers. 

     

    CALEF offers unique points of view about the forms and shapes of contemporary art through a curated selection of national and international art galleries/independent artists, continuing to maintain the freshness and the innovative perspectives of contemporary art.

  • What are limited editions?

    Limited editions vs original works, price points, market

    Limited edition means the creation of a solitary work, conceived and produced by the artist or author under their direction, which is intended for limited reproduction, signed and numbered by the artist. These are images or casts that are produced in multiples.

     PRICE POINTS 

    Because limited editions are created in a series that varies from 25, 50, and 100, the sale price is considerably lower that in the case of the original works. This created a new market and customers, due to the affordable aspect of each edition. Limited editions create an opportunity for people to get their hands on your work who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to afford an original.

     

    EDITIONS ARE STILL UNIQUE 

    While editioned prints are not unique, they are still original artworks, just like paintings, drawings, or sculptures. The materials used, be it printing plates or photographic negatives, are often destroyed, making it impossible to add to the edition later on.

    The Value of Limited Edition Prints

    They are particularly appealing to collectors for their affordability, investment-worthiness, variety, and originality. CALEF curatorial team and advisors, scan the market in order to find real value in each edition. 

     

    Just like with any other artwork, the value of limited edition prints can also increase over time. As prints in an edition get sold out, their prices may increase significantly in the secondary market. When it comes to prints made by emerging artists, the prices can increase with a spike in their reputation.

     

    The Authenticity of Limited Edition Art Prints

    Most artists sign their prints at the bottom right corner of the piece, that way approving its authenticity. The signature can also be located on its accompanying Certificate of Authenticity.

    Supporting galleries, emerging and well-established artists

    For the 1st edition, we poropose up 30  attending independent artists and galleries, selected by the curatorial team and advisers.
    The participation for each attending individual is free is charge. 
    Each participant recives an individual booth to presents their edition.

  • Special art publications section

    Presenting artist books and catalogues

    Artists' books (or book arts or book objects) are works of art that utilizes the form of the book. They are often published in small editions, though they are sometimes produced as one-of-a-kind objects.
    Usual bookstores hold a small number of contemporary art catalogues, focusing primarily on art history related materials. 
    Due to the lack of market space in conventional bookstores, galleries and artists usually sell catalogues on their individual platforms.

  • Special Country Focus Exhibition

    1st edition: Germany

    Each edition propose a special country focus exhibition in order to position Bucharest as a attractive city for diverse and up to date cultural events, encouraging cultural exchanges and partnerships between the international community and the Bucharest space. 

     

    For the 1st edition, the curatorial team and advisors propose Germany as focuse area. The booth is going to be represented by a german gallery/independent artist well-established in the limited edition market. 

     

    Each year country focuse prgram supports local creative effervescence and consistent cultural exchanges through the implementation of partnership mechanisms that promote co-production and collaboration.

    Artist talks, special guests, guided tours

    The CALEF TALKS program brings together speakers from different fields to reflect on new artistic discourses and the new form of contemporary art emerging. The program includes: 

     

    Artist guied workshops for kids (2)

    Daily guided tours throught the fair (4/day)

    Talks with speakers from different filds. Eg. copyright and intelectual property, young collecting: new faces and ways of collecting (2/day)
